OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. (Jan. 25, 2017) – The USMMA men's basketball team dropped a Skyline Conference road tilt at Old Westbury on Wednesday night by the final score of 80-57. The Mariners' record falls to 5-12 (2-7 Skyline) on the season, while the Panthers improve to 10-7 (6-2 Skyline) in triumph.
Senior Matt Miller (Augusta, Ga.) led all players in the game with 24 points, while sophomore David Washington (Frisco, Texas) added nine points and freshman Eric Sobocinski (Southampton, N.J.) contributed eight. Senior Drew Thorpe (Cornwall, N.Y.) led the Mariner bench with seven points and classmate Hunter Jones (Goodyear, Ariz.) recorded a team-high nine rebounds, three assists and two steals.
The Mariners held a 35-28 lead at halftime thanks in large part to 18 first-half points by Miller. However, the Panthers exploded in the second half for 55 points – 31 of which came from just two players, senior Jamail Stanley, who had 17, and classmate Lylle Ryals, who added 14 in the frame.
Ryals and junior Preston Powell led four Old Westbury players that scored in double-figures with 20 points apiece. Stanley ended the game with a double-double – 19 points and a game-high 12 rebounds, while senior Stephon Odle chipped in with 10 points.
The Mariners return to the hardwood this coming Saturday, Jan. 28, when they host Farmingdale State for a 2 p.m. tip at the Liebertz Gymnasium. Live stats and a live video feed of the game will be available with links on the USMMA Men's Basketball Schedule Page.
