KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Jan. 17, 2017) – On Tuesday night, the USMMA men's basketball team lost a Skyline Conference affair at home to St. Joseph's of Long Island, 64-59, at the Liebertz Gymnasium. In defeat, the Mariners fall to 5-11 (2-6 Skyline) on the season, while the Golden Eagles improve to 4-11 (3-4 Skyline).
Senior Matt Miller (Augusta, Ga.) matched his career-high with a game-best 33 points, including a perfect 10-for-10 from the free-throw line. Junior Christian Wittendorf (Granger, Ind.) added 13 points and eight rebounds and sophomore David Washington (Frisco, Texas) brought down a career-high 16 boards to lead all players in the game.
The Mariners held a lead for a majority of the opening 11 minutes of the game until the St. Joe's nailed a three at 7:50 of the first to take their first lead of the game. The visitors' advantage reached as high as 10 points, but Merchant Marine brought it back down to just three, 30-27, with 2:11 to play. However, the Golden Eagles finished the half on an 8-3 run to take a 38-30 lead into the halftime break.
In the second half, SJC extended the advantage to as many as 13 points about five minutes in. Once again, the Mariners chipped away and came within three yet again late, at 4:23, when Miller drained a three-pointer (one of three on the night for him) to make the score 54-51. That was the closest that USMMA would come, however, as St. Joseph's held the Mariners at bay by hitting eight free throws out of 12 attempts down the stretch.
For the Golden Eagles, senior Andy Laurent registered 22 points, with freshmen Joe Santoro and Frank Basile contributed 10 points each off the bench. Santoro had a team-high five rebounds.
The Mariners are back in action next Wednesday evening, Jan. 25, when they travel to nearby Old Westbury for a Skyline Conference matchup against the Panthers. Live stats for the contest will be available at this link.
