BROOKLYN, N.Y. (Jan. 14, 2017) – Senior Matt Miller (Augusta, Ga.) drained a jumper at the top of the key with 2.1 seconds left to lift the USMMA men's basketball team to a dramatic, come-from-behind victory over Skyline opponent St. Joseph's-Brooklyn, 65-63, on Saturday at the Bears' Hill Center. The victory improves the Mariners' record to 5-10 (2-5 Skyline), while St. Joe's falls to 4-10 (1-5 Skyline).
The Mariners held the Bears without a field goal for the final eight-plus minutes of the game. St. Joseph's had a game-high 18-point lead, 57-39, with 9:49 on the clock in the second half before Merchant Marine finished the final nine-plus minutes on a 26-4 run, only allowing just one jumper at 8:09 and four free throws to the Bears.
Miller had 11 points during that stretch, while junior Robbie Kennedy (Spring Lake, N.J.) and classmate Christian Wittendorf (Granger, Ind.) contributed seven and six points, respectively to help the Mariners erase the large deficit.
