Mariners Drop Home Skyline Contest To Purchase, 76-57, Wednesday Night

KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Jan. 11, 2017) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy men's basketball team was defeated by Skyline divisional opponent Purchase College, 76-57, at home on Wednesday night at the Liebertz Gymnasium. The loss drops the Mariners' record to 4-10 (1-5 Skyline) and the Panthers improve to 9-4 (3-2 Skyline).
 
Sophomore David Washington (Frisco, Texas) led the way for USMMA with a double-double effort – draining 12 points, while matching the game-high of 11 rebounds. Senior Drew Thorpe (Cornwall, N.Y.) recorded the first double-digit scoring effort of his career with 11 points, all coming in the second half. Freshman Eric Sobocinski (Southampton, N.J.) and senior Hunter Jones (Goodyear, Ariz.) both recorded nine points each and junior Christian Wittendorf (Granger, Ind.) contributed 11.
 
The two teams exchanged leads early and the Mariners held a two-point advantage, 8-6, just over five minutes in. The Panthers used the next eight minutes to build up a double-digit lead, 23-13, at 6:04. Despite Merchant Marine cutting the deficit back down to eight shortly after, Purchase went on a 16-5 run over four minutes late in the first fueled by four three-pointers to take a, 39-20 lead. The visitors led, 39-22, at the half.
 
The Mariners battled back to within 13 points early in the second half, but the Panther lead hit 20 points at 15:22 and only fell below 20 again late in the half.
 
Four players scored in double-figures for Purchase, with junior Brian Berrios and sophomore Deshawn Cann tying for the game-high with 14 points each. Cann also registered a double-double with 11 points, while also dishing out five-assists to lead all players. Junior Kewan Beebe added 13 off the bench and classmate Nikeem Deleon drained 10.
 
USMMA returns to action this Saturday, Jan. 14, with a road Skyline contest at St. Joseph's College of Brooklyn. Action is slated to get underway at 4 p.m. at the Bears' Hill Center.
