NEWBURGH, N.Y. (Jan. 4, 2017) – The USMMA men's basketball team lost its first game of the New Year on Wednesday night, falling to the Knights of Mount St. Mary College, 56-50, in Skyline Conference action. In defeat, the Mariners fall to 4-8 (1-3 Skyline), while the Knights improve to 8-3 (3-0 Skyline) with the win.
Two players scored in double-figures for Merchant Marine, as senior Matt Miller (Augusta, Ga.) led all players in the game with 19 points and junior Robbie Kennedy (Spring Lake, N.J.) added 16 off the bench. Sophomore David Washington (Frisco, Texas) brought down a game-high 11 rebounds, while also contributing six points and recording four blocks.
Mount St. Mary built up a 5-2 lead throughout the first three-plus minutes, but the Mariners responded with a 9-0 run to take an 11-5 advantage at 12:14. USMMA retained the lead for the remainder of the opening half, hitting two more leads of six points later in the frame before going into the locker room at halftime up, 26-23.
The Knights fought back in the second half and re-took the lead at 11:08, 35-33. The two teams battled down the stretch, as the lead changed four more times in the next nine minutes. The hosts went ahead by two at 2:13, 52-50, and after three failed possessions, extended their advantage to five with just 25 seconds remaining.
For Mount St. Mary, junior Greard Nocera scored a team-best 14 points with five rebounds and three assists, while senior Connor Nicholson and junior Jason Jones chipped in with nine apiece. Sophomore Connor Bacci scored seven points with a team-high eight rebounds and freshman Jovin Ramos also had seven points in the victory.
Up next, Merchant Marine will travel up to Albany, N.Y., this Saturday, Jan. 7, for a road matchup again Skyline opponent Sage. Game time is scheduled for 3 p.m. at the Gators' Kahl Gymnasium.
