BRONX, N.Y. (Dec. 3, 2016) – Despite two players scoring 20-plus points, the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy men's basketball team lost its road conference matchup to rival SUNY Maritime, 87-76, on Saturday afternoon at the Privateers' Riesenberg Gymnasium. The loss drops the Mariners to 1-6 (0-2 Skyline) on the season, while Maritime improves to 4-3 (1-1 Skyline).
Senior Matt Miller (Augusta, Ga.) led all players in the game with 29 points, while junior Christian Wittendorf (Granger, Ind.) recorded a double-double with 22 points and a game-high 15 rebounds. Freshman Connor Green (Flower Mound, Texas) contributed six points and a team-best four assists, while classmate Eric Sobocinski (Southampton, N.J.) added six points off the bench.
Junior Stephen Hinton (Warrenton, Va.) notched five points and four boards and sophomore David Washington (Frisco, Texas) reveresed that with four points and five boards. Senior Hunter Jones (Goodyear, Ariz.) and freshman Will Quigley (Trumbull, Conn.) rounded out the Mariner scorers with two points apiece.
For SUNY Maritime, senior Tim Hoch scored 27 points, while Patrick MacDonald added 23 points and Isaiah Hayes chipped in with 12. MacDonald brought down a team-best six rebounds and John Liccese dished out a game-high seven assists.
The Mariners are back at it this Monday, Dec. 5, when they travel up to Hartford, Conn., to take on Trinity College. Tipoff is scheduled for 5 p.m. at the Bantams' Ray Oosting Gymnasium.
