KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Dec. 1, 2016) – On Thursday night at the Liebertz Gymnasium, the USMMA men's basketball team faltered in its home-opener to Skyline Conference foe Sarah Lawrence, 66-57. The loss drops the Mariners to 1-5 (0-1 Skyline) on the season, while the Gryphons improve to 2-3 (1-0 Skyline) with the win.
Senior Matt Miller (Augusta, Ga.) scored a game-high 25 points, while also bringing down six rebounds. Sophomore David Washington (Frisco, Texas) recorded a double-double with 11 points and a game-best 13 rebounds with three steals as well, and senior Hunter Jones (Goodyear, Ariz.) contributed 11 points for Merchant Marine.
On the Sarah Lawrence side, a pair of bench players led the way for the Gryphons, as freshman Joseph Kleeman and junior Malin Segal both had 13 points. Sophomore Parker Hagmaier added 11 points and a team-high eight rebounds, while classmate Gabriel Eng dished out a game-high six assists and Kleeman had four steals.
Up next, Merchant Marine travels up to the Bronx for a tilt against local- and industry-rival SUNY Maritime College this Saturday, Dec. 3.
