Box Score

NEW YORK (Nov. 22, 2016) – The USMMA men's basketball team lost a road, non-conference game at Hunter College, 66-56, on Tuesday night. The Mariners fall to 0-3 on the season in defeat, while the Hawks improve to 2-2.

Needing just three points to notch 1,000 for his career, senior Matt Miller (Augusta, Ga.) was held scoreless in a back-and-forth first half, but finished with a team-high 12 points – all in the final 20 minutes – including the milestone 1,000th point on a layup at 11:50 that pulled the Mariners within one point of Hunter, 42-41.

The Hawks scored the next five points, however, to gain a six-point advantage, which they later expanded to 10 points, 57-47 with 4:27 remaining. The Mariners came back within seven points, 57-50, on a layup by junior Christian Wittendorf (Granger, Ind.), but were unable to pull any closer in the final two-plus.

Freshman Connor Green (Flower Mound, Texas) notched his first career double-digit effort with 11 points. Junior Robbie Kennedy (Spring Lake, N.J.) contributed nine points while tying for the game-high with six rebounds with Wittendorf, who finished the game with eight points.

Off the bench, junior Stephen Hinton (Warrenton, Va.) added seven points and freshman Michael Bell (Ashburn, Va.) chipped in with six.

For Hunter, Amer Lukac led all players in the game with 21 points and also brought down a team-best five rebounds. Mamadou Sakho drained 17 points off the bench.

The Mariners will be in action this weekend, when they travel up to Boston, Mass., to take part in UMass-Boston's Harbor Invitational on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 25-26. On Friday evening at 6 p.m., Merchant Marine will take on Daniel Webster in a neutral site game. They will then face either the host Beacons or Vermont Tech on the second day.
