ALLENTOWN, Pa. (Nov. 19, 2016) – Senior Matt Miller (Augusta, Ga.) entered Saturday's game needing just 36 points for 1,000 career points. He came up just three points shy, as he led all players in the Mariners' 83-66 loss to Keystone College with a career-best 33 points. In defeat, USMMA falls to 0-2 on the young season, while the Giants improve to 1-1.
Miller had 22 points at halftime on 8-for-18 shooting (3-of-7 from three-point range) with three free throws. The Mariners trailed by eight at the half, 38-30.
The senior added 11 more points in the second half as he narrowed in closer and closer to 1,000 points in the waning minutes. He hit a jumper with 3:59 remaining that wound up being his final two points of the night.
Miller also ended the contest tying for the game-high with eight rebounds. Freshman Connor Green (Flower Mound, Texas) scored nine points for Merchant Marine to go along with four steals and three assists, while three other players added six points apiece – sophomore David Washington (Frisco, Texas), senior Drew Thrope (Cornwall, N.Y.) and junior Stephen Hinton (Warrenton, Va.). Washington also brought down seven boards.
Three players scored in double-figures for Keystone – sophomore Devin Williams led the way with 28 points, senior Khyle Diaz contributed 15 and sophomore Shashawn Drayton scored 12.
The Mariners return to the court this Tuesday night, Nov. 22, when they travel to Manhattan to take on Hunter College. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Hawks' Hunter Sportsplex.
