Men’s Basketball Lends A Helping Hand At Good+ Foundation

KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Nov. 9, 2016) – Last week, members of the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy men's basketball team traveled into New York City for a community service project at the Good+ Foundation, located in midtown Manhattan.

Good+ is an organization whose primary goal is to provide low income parents with essential tools – such as cribs, car seats, strollers, diapers, etc. – to maintain the health and safety of their children. They work with anti-poverty programs through an incentive based model that offers long-term support of parents and children in need.

The Mariners helped turn what would have been a multi-week long process of unloading shipments of donations in connection with these anti-poverty programs into a process that just took a few hours with their manpower.

The team was responsible for taking all of the shipments of donations and separating them into different tiers and then breaking them up according to male and female children's items.

"Volunteering with Good+ was the first of a series of servant leadership opportunities that the men's basketball program intends on engaging in throughout the 2016-17 academic calendar," commented Coach Dennis Kazimir. "For our student-athletes and staff, it was a tremendously humbling experience at the completion of our day to self-reflect on how fortunate we are on a daily basis to live the lives we do."

One of Coach Kazimir's main goals for the program is to get the squad more actively involved in community outreach projects. More community service trips are planned for the remainder of the year. Up next, for the men's basketball program is Day One, an organization that partners with youth to end dating abuse and domestic violence through community education, supportive services, legal advocacy and leadership development.
