Edick Joins Men’s Basketball Staff As Assistant Coach

KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Oct. 28, 2016) – On Friday, U.S. Merchant Marine Academy men's basketball Interim Head Coach Dennis Kazimir announced that Nate Edick will join the Mariner staff before the upcoming 2016-17 season. Edick officially began at USMMA this past Monday, Oct. 24.

"I am inspired and very grateful to be joining the men's basketball program here at the United States Merchant Marine Academy," said Edick. "I want to thank Athletic Director Mo White, Head Basketball Coach Dennis Kazimir and the rest of the athletic department for this opportunity. I look forward to working with our student-athletes and supporting them in all of their academic and athletic endeavors."

Edick joins the Academy after a two-year stint as an assistant men's basketball coach with the University of Virginia-Wise. With the UVA-Wise Cavaliers, he was responsible for opponent scouting, recruiting and working with perimeter players.

Prior to his time at Wise, Edick served two years on staff at VCU as a graduate assistant coach. Edick assisted the Rams program with individual and team workouts, opponent scouting reports, video implementation and analysis, and with the day-to-day operations of the program. VCU won a total of 53 games including back-to-back Atlantic-10 Championship game appearances and advanced to the NCAA Tournament both of those two seasons.

Edick began his coaching career at the University of Tulsa in 2011 where he spent a season as the video coordinator. His primary responsibility was coordinating the program's video operations, including film breakdown, film exchange, and evaluation video for the University of Tulsa. He also assisted the coaching staff with opponent scouting reports, on-campus recruiting visits and with monitoring student-athlete academics.

No stranger to Division III men's basketball, the Worthington, Ohio native graduated from Otterbein University in June of 2011 where he was a two-time Academic All-OAC and All-District selection. During his senior season, he was the recipient of the Ohio Athletic Conference Clyde Lamb Award, which is given to the top male student-athlete at each institution in the OAC. During his freshman season at Marietta College, he was the NCAA statistical champion in three-point field-goal shooting percentage after connecting on 54.8% of his three-point attempts.

Edick completed his Master's Degree in education with a focus in Sports Leadership from Virginia Commonwealth in May of 2014. He currently resides in Westbury, N.Y.

"Dating back to his playing days at Otterbein University, Nate has always embodied the core values of the Merchant Marine Academy," commented Kazimir. "He has excelled on the court, in the classroom and with his many off the court endeavors. Nate has built upon his own personal excellence in all those areas and imparted that same passion to the players he has coached during his decorated coaching career. I couldn't be more elated to have Nate helping to build our student-athletes currently in the program, while helping us recruit others who will build upon our institution's mission."
