TOWSON, Md. (Feb. 20, 2016) – The USMMA men's basketball team lost a road, Landmark Conference game on Saturday at Goucher, 78-67, at the Gophers' Decker Sports & Recreation Center. The Mariners fall to 11-13 (6-9 Landmark) on the season, while Goucher improves to 10-15 (6-10 Landmark).
Four Mariner starters scored in double-figures, with junior George Hatzioannides (Oakland Gardens, N.Y.) leading the way, as he recorded a double-double with 17 points and a game-high 11 rebounds to go along with four assists. Classmate Matt Miller (Augusta, Ga.) contributed 12 points, while seniors Scott Dennin (Gilbertsville, Pa.) and David Smith (Lakewood, Wash.) added 10 apiece. Senior Preston Padgett (Leavenworth, Kan.) chipped in with nine points.
Merchant Marine scored the first 11 points of the game and led for nearly the entire first half. The Gophers chipped away at the Mariners' lead throughout the half and eventually took their first lead of the afternoon at 1:17 on a jumper that made the score 34-33. That's where it remained into the halftime break.
The teams swapped the lead three times in the first four minutes of the second half before the Mariners sustained an advantage for most of the next seven minutes, with their lead reaching as high as four points, 54-50 at 9:53.
Goucher scored nine straight points over the next two-plus minutes, however, to take a five-point lead, 59-54 at 7:45. The Gophers kept their advantage above five points in the final five minutes of the game, with their lead reaching double-digits in the final minute of action.
Senior Kevin Miles led all players with 21 points for the Gophers, while also bringing down a team-high nine boards. Junior Chris Outing added 17 points off the bench, and seniors Norman Allen II and Ed Oliver both scored in double-figures with 13 and 10 points, respectively.
The Mariners close out the 2015-16 season on Sunday, when they take on Catholic in the program's final Landmark Conference game. Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. at the Cardinals' DuFour Center in Washington, D.C. Live stats and a live video feed of the game will be available by following those links.
