Mariners Lose To Moravian On The Road Monday Night

BETHLEHEM, Pa. (Feb. 15, 2016) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy men's basketball team dropped its Landmark Conference game on the road Monday night at Moravian College, 87-77. In defeat, the Mariners fall to 11-12 (6-8 Landmark), while the Greyhounds improve to 10-13 (5-10 Landmark).

Four Mariners scored in double-digits, as junior Matt Miller (Augusta, Ga.) led the way with 19, while classmate George Hatzioannides (Oakland Gardens, N.Y.) contributed 15 points and seniors David Smith (Lakewood, Wash.) and Preston Padgett (Leavenworth, Kan.) added 14 and 13, respectively. Hatzioannides and Miller tied for the team-high in rebounds with six apiece, and Hatzioannides led all players in the game with eight assists and three steals.

The Mariners controlled the pace early, building up a nine-point lead three minutes in and then later extending the advantage to 12 points on three separate occasions with as late as 4:54 to go in the first. The Greyhounds scored the next eight points over three minutes to cut their deficit down to four points. Play was even the rest of the half, and Merchant Marine took a 40-36 lead into the locker room at halftime.

Moravian scored the first five points of the second half to take its first lead of the night, 41-40, at 18:47. There were four lead changes over the next nine minutes before the Greyhounds took the lead for good, 59-58 at 9:12. A 13-4 run by the hosts brought their advantage up to double-digits, 72-62 with 5:40 remaining. Moravian built its lead up to as much as 14 points and the Mariners fought back to within eight points with over a minute left, but time ran out on the visitors.

Junior Brandon McGuire recorded a game-high 22 points to lead the Greyhounds, while freshman Oneil Holder drained 21 points. Both McGuire and Holder brought down eight boards apiece to lead all players in the game. Sophomore Matt Cardonne contributed 12 points and freshman Jake McGee added 10 off the bench.

Merchant Marine finishes the regular season with two Landmark games next weekend – at Goucher on Saturday, Feb. 20, and then the make-up game at Catholic on Sunday. Both games start at 2 p.m. Live links for the contests are available on the USMMA men's basketball schedule page.
