TOWSON, Md. (Feb. 1, 2016) – On Monday, the Landmark Conference announced that USMMA senior David Smith (Lakewood, Wash.) was named the league's Athlete of the Week for men's basketball. This is the first time this season and the second time in his career that he has earned this accolade.
Smith was the leading scorer in two big victories for Merchant Marine this past week. He led all players with 17 points and 11 rebounds in a win over Trinity (Conn.), which was receiving votes in the D3Hoops.com Top 25, picking up his team-leading third double-double of the year, to go along with three steals and one block.
In an important Landmark victory on Saturday over Goucher, the senior drained a game-high 22 points with five rebounds, two steals, a block and a steal. He was a perfect 5-for-5 from three-point range in the second half, helping the Mariners distance themselves down the stretch from a hot Gophers team. Over the two games, he shot 56.0-percent from the field (14-for-25), including 58.8-percent from three-point range (10-for-17). Smith now sits just 34 points away from 1,000 for his career.
