KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Jan. 30, 2016) – The USMMA men's basketball team defeated visiting Goucher College, 82-66, on Saturday afternoon at the Liebertz Gymnasium in Landmark Conference action. With the victory, the Mariners improve to 10-8 overall (5-6 Landmark), while the Gophers fall to 8-12 (4-7 Landmark).
Goucher came into Saturday's action hot, winning of four of their last five games over tough Landmark opponents, but the Mariners cooled the Gophers down and broke the tie in the conference standings with the victory, moving into sole possession of sixth place.
Prior to the contest, the men's basketball program paid tribute to its seven graduating seniors with a special Senior Day ceremony – Warren Manegan (Tokyo, Japan), David Gregory (Murrysville, Pa.), Chris Jennings (Plantation, Fla.), Andrew Williams (Lantana, Texas), Scott Dennin (Gilbertsville, Pa.), Preston Padgett (Leavenworth, Kan.) and David Smith (Lakewood, Wash.).
On the court, three players scored in double-figures for USMMA, led by Smith, who had 22 points, with 17 coming in the second half alone. He connected on 6-of-10 three-pointers and was a perfect 5-for-5 from long distance in the second half. Padgett added 17, while junior Matt Miller (Augusta, Ga.) scored 14. Junior George Hatzioannides (Oakland Gardens, N.Y.) did a little bit of everything today, tallying nine points, four assists, four steals and three boards.
Right from the tip, the Mariners jumped out to a 7-0 lead and never looked back. They never trailed on the afternoon and led by as many as 24 points. The Mariners defense helped get them their early lead in the first half, forcing 12 turnovers and cashing in with 12 points off of TOs.
The second half was a whole different ball game for Smith and the Mariners. Smith hit two quick threes to start and didn't miss the rest of the game, as he made all six shots he took in the frame. To top it off, the rest of the seniors came off the bench and saw action in the closing minutes and registered baskets. Jennings and Gregory finished with three points and Dennin, Manegan and Williams all added two points each.
Freshman Mychal Stefanides led the Gophers with 13 points and senior Kevin Miles added 10 despite fouling out late in the contest. Senior Ed Oliver brought down a team-best five rebounds for Goucher.
