KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Jan. 6, 2015) – The U.S Merchant Marine Academy men's basketball team lost a non-conference matchup to NYU on Tuesday night at the Liebertz Gymnasium by the final score of 79-55. The defeat drops Merchant Marine to 2-10 on the season as the Violets improve to 8-2.
Freshman Robbie Kennedy (Spring Lake, N.J.) led all players in the game and set a new personal best with 21 points. Junior Preston Padgett (Leavenworth, Kan.) also had his best output of the season, notching 13 points and matching classmate Scott Dennin (Gilbertsville, Pa.) for the team-best with seven rebounds.
Three players scored in double-figures for NYU – junior Evan Kupferberg had 20 points, while classmate Hakeem Harris notched 14 and junior big-man Costis Gontikas buried 13. Gontikas also led all players with nine rebounds. Junior Max Ralby had a great all-around game with six points, five rebounds, five assists and three steals.
A big difference in the game was the play at the glass, as the Violets out-rebounded the Mariners 40-26. NYU also shot a superb 56.0-percent from the field on the night (28-for-50), including firing at a 64.0-percent clip in the opening half. USMMA ended the game shooting 36.8-percent (21-for-57). However, Merchant Marine was just 17.4-percent from the free-throw line (4-for-23). The NYU bench also contributed 32 points for the Violets.
The Mariners are back at it on Saturday, Jan. 6, with a Landmark Conference contest at 4 p.m. against Susquehanna University. The game will be the second of a doubleheader at Liebertz Gym that begins at 2 p.m. with the women hosting the Crusaders.
