Setting the Scene... The USMMA men's basketball team hits the road Saturday afternoon for a key Landmark Conference game against first-place Catholic. Merchant Marine is back in the playoff race after winning back-to-back league contests, including a 91-77 victory over Drew Wednesday night. The Cardinals most recently defeated Goucher on the road, 86-76.
Series History... Catholic holds a 13-8 edge over USMMA in the all-time series. CUA picked up three wins over the Mariners last year including a decision in the Landmark Conference semifinals. Earlier this season, Merchant Marine suffered a 76-66 loss to Catholic despite 19 points from Zach Karczewski (Austin, TX) and shooting 52.2 percent from the floor.
Sharp Shooters... Over the last two games, USMMA has drained 18 trifectas, including a season high 11 against Juniata. David Smith (Lakewood, WA) has accounted for six three-pointers and dropped five versus the Eagles. Preston Padgett (Leavenworth, KS) knocked down three treys in each of the last two games and is shooting 47.4 percent from beyond the arc this season.
Home Stand... Following USMMA's clash with Catholic, the Mariners return to a stretch of playing six home games in seven contests. Merchant Marine is currently 3-3 on the pseudo-home stand and will play Scranton, Goucher, and Vaughn in the next series in Kings Point, NY.
Block Party... Five different players recorded a block versus Drew as Merchant Marine added to its Landmark Conference leading total. The Mariners are averaging 5.9 blocks per game as well as a circuit best 42.4 rebounds per game.
Landmark Conference Notebook... Catholic sits just one game ahead of Scranton for the top spot in the Landmark Conference standings. Susquehanna is in third place at 4-3 while four teams are within one-half game of each other for the final playoff spot.
Scouting the Cardinals... Steve Limberiou ranks third in the Landmark Conference scoring 17.1 points per game. The Cardinals turn the ball over fewer times than any team in the league, averaging just 8.4 miscues per game.
