Setting the Scene... The USMMA men's basketball plays its first home of the season Monday afternoon as they host rival Maritime (NY). Merchant Marine is coming off of a 1-1outing last weekend at the Admiral's classic, hosted by the Privateers. Maritime (NY) also went 1-1 at their own tournament but slipped to 1-2 last time out with an 83-54 loss to Morrisville.
Series History... Merchant Marine has historically dominated its maritime rival and leads the all-time series against the Privateers, 44-9. Last season the Mariners knocked off Maritime (NY) 78-42, hitting nine three-pointers and getting 25 points from Reed Buck.
On the Glass... USMMA dominated the rebounding battle in its first win of the season against Sarah Lawrence. The Mariners grabbed 61 boards compared to just 40 for the Gryphons. Nick Sergio (Patchouge, NY) posted his first double-double of the year in the victory with 18 points and 10 rebounds.
Freshman Starters... Matthew Miller (Augusta, GA) and Hunter Jones (Goodyear, AZ) have both made starts for the Mariners in their rookie season. Miller has started both games this year and scored 16 points against Sarah Lawrence. Jones has averaged 8.0 points in his first two games for Merchant Marine.
Preseason Poll... The Mariners received two first-place votes but was ultimately picked to finish fourth in the 2013-14 Landmark Conference preseason coaches' poll. Scranton was selected as the league's preseason favorite while Juniata and Catholic narrowly edged out the Mariners for the second and third positions, respectively.
Landmark Conference Notebook... Seven of the eight teams in the Landmark Conference currently hold a record of .500 or better early in 2013-14. Scranton is the only remaining unbeaten team in the league as the Royals currently sit at 3-0.
Scouting the Privateers... T'Vaughn Gibson leads the Privateers offense with 19.7 points per game. Sean Corley is the squad's leading rebounder with 6.7 rebounds per game. Maritime (NY) has struggled rebounding this year, currently holding a margin of -17.3.
