Reed Buck Joins 1,000 Point Club

Middletown, CT – Junior forward Reed Buck (Lawrenceville, GA) amassed his 1,000th career point as a member of the United States Merchant Marine Academy Mariners (10-10, 3-6 LC), tallying a game-high 22 points in a 76-65 road loss to the Cardinals of Wesleyan University (10-10, 3-4 NESCAC) Monday night in Middletown, CT.

Buck, the 2012 Landmark Conference Player of the Year, shot 8-18 from the field including three three-pointers, notching his 1,000th point on one of his three free throws made.

The Cardinals opened the contest's scoring, taking a 7-0 lead out of the gate.  Merchant Marine got on the scoreboard with a pair of free throws from freshman forward Andrew Williams (Denton, TX) before a pair of jumpers and a trifecta from Buck tied the game at nine with 14:56 left in the half.

USMMA grabbed their first lead of the contest on a three pointer by freshman guard George Hatzioannides (Oakland Gardens, NY), which would end up being his only bucket of the night.

Wesleyan quickly grabbed momentum right back and would open a five point lead, their largest of the half, before heading into the break with a 39-36 advantage.

Merchant Marine scored the first six points of the second half to usurp a lead of their own.  After Buck put the Mariners out in front by three with 16:15 remaining, the Cardinals quickly tied the contest with a triple, and would not relinquish the advantage for the rest of the game.

Wesleyan stuck the Mariners with an 18 point deficit before eventually closing out the contest with an 11 point victory.

Beyond the arc shooting proved to be one of the major differences in the game as Merchant Marine was outshot 42% - 33% from three point range.

Junior forward Nick Sergio (Patchogue, NY) led USMMA in rebounds with five and freshman guard Preston Padgett (Leavenworth, KS) came off the bench to contribute nine points.

The Mariners return to conference play when they look to avenge an early season home loss as they head to Towson, MD for a matchup with Goucher College (5-13, 3-5 LC) Saturday Feb. 2 and 7:00 PM.
