Setting the Scene... The USMMA men's basketball team completes its season series with Landmark Conference rival Scranton Wednesday night inside O'Hara Hall. The Mariners upset then-#9 Scranton in the teams' first meeting of the year as Merchant Marine claimed a 67-54 victory. USMMA is looking to bounce back after a 74-57 loss to #9 Catholic last time out. The Royals have rebounded from three straight losses and enter Wednesday's match-up riding a four game winning streak.
Series History... Scranton's advantage in the all-time series was trimmed to just 10-7 after the Mariners defeated the Royals on December 9. USMMA freshman Andrew Williams (Lantana, TX) broke out in that game with his first collegiate double-double, 15 points and 13 rebounds. The Royals were limited to just 26.3 percent shooting, 15-57, in a loss that snapped what had been a 14-game home winning streak
Get Knocked Down, Get Up Again... The Mariners are 8-5 on the season and have yet to lose back-to-back games in 2012-13. USMMA is a perfect 5-0 after a loss and holds a 3-4 mark when competing after a victory. Merchant Marine is 3-1 at home on the year, winning those three games by an average of 26.3 points.
Bang for your "Buck"... Reed Buck (Lawrenceville, GA) has found his grove as of late, as the preseason All-American has inflated his scoring average to 18.8 points per game. Buck now ranks first in the Landmark Conference and 65th in NCAA Division III in scoring. The junior forward has reached double digits in 12 of USMMA's 13 games.
Power Game... The Mariners continue to top the Landmark Conference rankings in both rebounds and blocks per game. USMMA pulls down 41.5 rebounds per game as well as rejecting 5.2 shots per game. Merchant Marine also clocks in at 32nd in the NCAA rankings in rebounding margin, holding an average edge of 7.1 rebounds per game.
Up Next... USMMA will play its second straight home game this Saturday against Susquehanna in the back-end of a double header at O'Hara Hall.
