Mariners Fall at Moravian, 89-58

Bethlehem, PA – The USMMA men's basketball team ran into a Moravian team that made a school record 18 three-pointers and shot 54.5% from beyond the arc as the Greyhounds knocked off the Mariners 89-58 Saturday afternoon.  Andrew Williams (Lantana, TX) had a superb game for Merchant Marine has the freshman totaled 14 points, shooting 7-of-10 from the floor, while grabbing a game high nine rebounds.

Merchant Marine (3-3, 0-2 Landmark) rattled off seven straight points early in the game, leveling the score at 13-13 on a Reed Buck (Lawrenceville, GA) jump shot.  Buck finished the afternoon with a season low 10 points.  Nick Sergio (Patchogue, NY) also reached double figures with 13 points for the Mariners.

Moravian (6-1, 2-0 Landmark) answered USMMA's run by engineering a 9-0 spurt of their own en route to building a 39-28 advantage at halftime.  Five different Greyhounds scored at least ten points, led by Mike Bonavita, who went 4-of-5 from downtown.  Moravian shot 48.3% from the field and held a 38-32 rebounding advantage.

USMMA turned the ball over 20 times for the first time this season in the loss and shot 3-of-12 from three-point range.  The Mariners continue to spread around the offense as they have all season with eight different players reaching the scoreboard against the Greyhounds.

Merchant Marine will look to bounce back quickly as they take on #9 Scranton tomorrow afternoon in a Landmark Conference showdown.
