Kings Point, NY – The USMMA men's basketball team drained 11 three-pointers, including five from Reed Buck (Lawrenceville, GA) in a 72-44 rout of rival Coast Guard Wednesday night. The Mariners eventually sent 15 players to the floor and had all hit a field goal in the victory. Buck led the way with 22 points and five assists while Andrew Williams (Lantana, TX) tallied eight points and nine boards for the home team.
Merchant Marine (3-2) got off to a hot start, jumping out to a 15-7 advantage on the strength of a David Smith (Lakewood, WA) triple to force the Bears to call timeout. USMMA spread the ball out early as seven different Mariners combined for the first seven Merchant Marine buckets. The Mariners shot a blistering 57.7% from the field in the first half and went into the locker room with a comfortable 38-22 edge.
Coast Guard (1-5) made a run midway through the second half, scoring eight consecutive points but the Mariners had extended their lead in the opening stages of the second period. The Bears offense did not have anyone reach double-figures in scoring as USCGA was limited to 31.4% shooting.
The Mariners continued to pull away late as head coach Danny Nee emptied his bench in the closing minutes. Freshman David Gregory (Murrysville, PA) drilled a three-pointer for his first collegiate points, which brought his teammates to their feet.
Zach Karczewski (Austin, TX) had an all-around solid game as the guard hauled-in eight rebounds to go along with his six points. Preston Padgett (Leavensworth, KS) contributed to the Mariners deep game by racking up a trio of field goals from beyond the arc for nine points.
The Mariners will take to the road this weekend for conference games against Scranton and Moravian.
