KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Nov. 9, 2017) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy football team unveiled its new uniform for this weekend's Secretaries' Cup game against the U.S. Coast Guard Academy. The uniforms, which were made possible with the help of the USMMA Alumni Association and Foundation's Mariner Gridiron Club, are a tribute and throwback to the Kings Point uniform of the 1970's.
The uniform is also scheduled to be highlighted on Saturday morning on ESPN's "Gear Up" segment, which is a weekly glimpse of special uniforms in college football. USMMA has worked closely with host Aaron Dodson and ESPN to feature the Academy's new look during SportsCenter on Saturday morning (7-9 a.m. EST). The segment can air at any point during SportsCenter, but it typically airs just prior to College GameDay between 8:30-9 a.m. EST.
During the game, the Mariners will wear all white with blue numbers and letters outlined in red along with "Star and Stripes" themed socks. The helmet features USMMA on the bumper with three iconic stickers on the back and traditional American flags on the sides. The most notable addition to the helmet is a gold "142" sticker which gives tribute to the 142 Midshipmen who died during World War II. "Be KP" represents the Culture Campaign at the Academy and incorporates the core values: Respect, Honor, Service. The green dot represents the program's commitment to prevent sexual assault, harassment and relationship violence.
ESPN will stream the 2017 Secretaries' Cup game against arch-rival Coast Guard live on ESPN3 at 12-noon EST on Saturday, Nov. 11. The game can be accessed on smart TVs, computers, smartphones, tablets and streaming devices through the ESPN or WatchESPN application. ESPN3 is available at no additional cost to those who receive ESPN's subscription from an affiliated service provider (i.e. cable provider).
