Moore, Sydlowski And Murphy Named 2017 Football Team Captains

KINGS POINT, N.Y. (August 9, 2017) – USMMA 13th-year head football coach Mike Toop '77 has announced that three seniors have been tapped as the Mariners' team captains for the upcoming 2017 campaign – quarterback Brice Moore (Pace, Fla.), linebacker Justin Sydlowski (Plymouth, Mich.) and offensive lineman Jake Murphy (Bethel Park, Pa.).

Moore, the 2016 Team MVP, served as a kickoff return specialist and starting running back over his first two seasons at Kings Point before taking over behind center full time last year. He was named a 2016 All-Liberty League First Team Specialist Athlete and was the team- and conference-leader with 1,041 rushing yards and 12 rushing touchdowns, while also ranking nationally in both categories (25th in rushing and 36th in TDs). Moore also threw for 766 yards and five touchdowns last year. In 28 games played over the past three seasons, he has amassed 1,350 rushing yards with 12 touchdowns and passed for 887 yards with eight TDs, while also compiling 767 yards on kickoff returns.

Sydlowski was the Mariners' starting weak-side linebacker in 2016 and finished the season tied for 10th on the squad with 29 total tackles (21 solo and eight assisted). He also forced a team-best two fumbles and recovered one, while also recording an interception – one of just four Mariner defenders to do so last year. Over his first three seasons, Sydlowski has played in 21 games and has 38 total tackles in his career (24 solo and 14 assisted) with the one INT.

Murphy has been a starting offensive lineman for Merchant Marine each of the past two seasons after playing linebacker during his freshman campaign. He was the starting center in 2015 before moving to the left tackle position last year. Thanks to Murphy's blocking efforts up front, the Mariners had the third-best rushing offense in all of Division III last season (299.9 yards per game). He has played in 27 games over his career thus far, and he has nine total tackles to his name (six solo and three assisted).

The Mariners open the 2017 season on Saturday, Sept. 2, at home against Misericordia University. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. on Tomb Field at Brooks Stadium.
