10 Mariners Earn Liberty League All-Academic Team Honors

KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Nov. 14, 2016) – Earlier this month, the Liberty League announced the All-Academic Teams for football and USMMA had 10 student-athletes join over 130 others from around the conference in receiving honors for their hard work in the classroom.

To be recognized as a member of the All-Academic Team a student-athlete must be a sophomore or higher in class standing with a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.30. The Liberty League elevated the GPA requirement from 3.20 to 3.30 this fall to follow the established standard for eligibility for CoSIDA Academic All-America awards.

"Academic success is a great point of pride for our Liberty League institutions and student-athletes," said Liberty League Commissioner Tracy King. "Even as we raised our standard this year, our student-athletes continue to demonstrate that it is possible to not only excel academically, but to achieve athletically at the highest level in Division III. I congratulate and salute them on their outstanding achievements."

For Merchant Marine, representing the seniors (Class of 2017) on the list were Tom Siegharter (Weston, Wis.) and Joshua Woodburn (Huntingtown, Md.). Both Siegharter and Woodburn earned this accolade each of the last two seasons.

There were three Mariner juniors (Class of 2018) represented on the All-Academic Team – junior Kyle Carmody (Albuquerque, N.M.), William Marino (Mount Kisco, N.Y.) and Erik Swayne (Great Falls, Va.). This is the second straight year that this trio has earned this accolade.

The five sophomores (Class of 2019) who are featured on this year's list for the first time were Brooks Cannell (Ambler, Pa.), Garrett Irizarry (Blairstown, N.J.), Addison Radcliff (Orlando, Fla.), Ing Hao Veasna (Hampton, N.H.) and Jake Wallace (Pittsburg, Pa.).
