Football Falls To Union On The Road, 42-16

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. (Nov. 5, 2016) – The USMMA football team lost a Liberty League matchup on the road up at Union College on Saturday by the final score of 42-16. In defeat, the Mariners fall to an even 4-4 on the season (3-3 Liberty), while the Dutchmen improve to 3-6 (2-4 Liberty) with the win.
 
The Mariners held a 10-7 lead early in the second quarter, but Union scored five unanswered touchdowns in the next 15 minutes to jump out to a 42-10 lead by the early part of the third.
 
Junior quarterback Brice Moore (Pace, Fla.) led the Merchant Marine offense with 108 yards on the ground and a second-quarter rushing touchdown. Classmate Luke Tiefenthaler (Freehold, N.J.) tallied 60 rushing yards and scored the game's last points with a third-quarter TD. Junior kicker Jake McDonough (Wilmington, N.C.) opened the scoring in the game by nailing a 36-yard field goal. He was also 1-for-1 on PATs.
 
On defense, sophomore Brooks Cannell (Ambler, Pa.) registered a team-high 14 tackles (four solo and 10 assisted), while senior Patrick Keyes (Parsippany, N.J.) recorded 12 stops (three solo and nine assisted). Both Cannell and Keyes led the Mariners with one tackle for a loss each.
 
For Union, junior Connor Kinzelmann led all players in the game with 234 rushing yards, while also finding the end zone three times. Senior Jermaine Carn added 148 yards on the ground and one score. Classmate Blake Geller was 10-for-12 passing for 116 yards and two TDs. Junior Alex Kaplanovich was Geller's top target with five catches for 86 yards and both touchdown receptions.
 
Defensively, junior Jake Lombardo had a game-high 17 tackles. Three other Dutchmen recorded double-digit tackles – senior Conor O'Malley had 14, senior Brian Alebiosu added 11 and sophomore Hunter Ordukhanyan contributed 10.
 
The Mariners return to action next Saturday, Nov. 12, for the regular season finale at home against Springfield College. Opening kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. at Brooks Stadium. Prior to the game, the Mariners will pay tribute to their 13 graduating seniors with a special Senior Day ceremony.
