KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Oct. 22, 2016) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy football team lost to #15/16 St. Lawrence, 8-0, on Saturday afternoon in the annual Hoffman Cup game at Brooks Stadium. The loss drops the Mariners' record to 4-3 (3-2 Liberty), while the Saints improve to 7-0 (4-0 Liberty).
After a scoreless first half, St. Lawrence got on the board on their first drive of the third quarter. Junior quarterback Sean Richardson broke loose for a 78-yard touchdown run on the Saints' second play. On the extra point attempt, the holder, freshman Tyler Burns, had to run the ball after a high snap and reached the end zone for the two-point conversion.
The Mariner offense was led by junior quarterback Brice Moore (Pace, Fla.), who ran for 84 yards and threw for 126 on 7-for-12 passing. Freshman Joe Vitelli (Warrington, Pa.) caught five passes for 40 yards and junior Aaron Rice (Vermilion, Ohio) hauled in a 67-yard pass in the four quarter.
On defense, five players tied for the team-lead with seven tackles. Senior Patrick Keyes (Parsippany, N.J.) had seven stops to go along with a first quarter interception and a pass breakup. Also registering seven tackles were seniors Ian Stoner (Glen Allen, Va.), Marcus Kitchin (Arlington, Texas) and Channing Meyer (Norman, Okla.) and sophomore Brian Harris (Yonkers, N.Y.).
Keyes was named the Mariners' MVP for the Hoffman Cup game.
Junior Skyler Williamson was St. Lawrence's MVP, as he led all players in the game with 20 tackles. Richardson ran for 120 yards and passed for 161 on 15-for-34 completions. Junior Vincenzo Ferraro had 10 catches for 85 yards.
The Mariners have a bye week next week and are back in action on Saturday, Nov. 5, when they travel up to Schenectady, N.Y., to take on Union College. Kickoff is scheduled for 12-noon at the Dutchmen's Frank Bailey Field.
