McDonough Earns Liberty & ECAC Player Of The Week Honors; Keyes Lands On Liberty Honor Roll

KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Oct. 18, 2016) – USMMA junior kicker Jake McDonough (Wilmington, N.C.) earned Special Teams Player of the Week honors from both the Liberty League and the ECAC, both conferences announced early this week. The Liberty also selected senior defensive back Patrick Keyes (Parsippany, N.J.) to the weekly honor roll.

McDonough nailed the game-winning 27-yard field goal as time expired to lift the Mariners over visiting RPI, 16-13, this past Saturday, Oct. 15. It was the junior's third field goal of the game, as he accounted for 10 of the Mariners 16 points on the day. It was also the second-straight week that McDonough hit a FG late in the fourth to win a game for Merchant Marine.

Keyes contributed defensively with five total tackles (two solo and three assisted), including one tackle in the third quarter that went for a loss of four yards.

McDonough currently ranks 21st in the nation with a .657 field goal percentage. Three other Mariners rank in the Top 25 in the country in four other categories. Freshman Joe Vitelli (Warrington, Pa.) ranks 12th in Combined Kick Returns with 571 yards. Junior quarterback Brice Moore (Pace, Fla.) ranks 13th with 797 rushing yards, while his 132.8 rushing yards per game is good for 14th. Moore and sophomore Wiley Martin (Polo, Mo.) are tied for 19th in the country in Rushing TDs (nine).

As a team, Merchant Marine ranks in the Top 10 out of all Division III programs in five categories. The Mariners are second in the country in Kickoff Return Defense (11.97 yards per return), third in Rushing Offense (350.7 yards per game) and Tackles for Losses Allowed (3.17 per game). They also rank fifth in Third Down Conversion Percentage (.542) and sixth in Fourth Down Conversion Percentage (.789).
