KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Sept. 27, 2016) – On Monday, the Liberty League announced its weekly award winners and U.S. Merchant Marine Academy junior quarterback Robert Moore (Pace, Fla.) was selected as the league's Offensive Player of the Week for football. The honor comes on the heels of the Mariners' huge 55-7 home victory over Rochester this past Saturday on Homecoming Day.
Moore led USMMA to its seventh largest margin of victory in program history as he had a hand in five of the Mariners' touchdowns on Saturday – two passing and three rushing. He produced 280 yards of total offense as he was a perfect 5-for-5 passing for 176 yards with an 81-yard strike and a 51-yard connection and he also led all players with 104 yards on the ground and three rushing touchdowns.
The junior continues to lead the Liberty League in rushing with 149 yards per game, while his 447 total rushing yards are good for second behind WPI's Sean McAllen, who has played one more game than Moore. Moore is also the league's leader in all purpose yards per game with 149, while his 229.7 yards of total offense per game ranks him fifth.
Sophomore Wiley Martin (Polo, Mo.) and Moore rank second and sixth, respectively, in the Liberty League in scoring, as Martin has six touchdowns and 12.0 points per game, while Moore has four TDs and 8.0 points per game. Freshman Joseph Vitelli (Warrington, Pa.) remains the Liberty League leader in kick returns with an average of 24.3 yards per return. Martin is 10th in total offense with 86.7 yards per game, and Vitelli is seventh in all purpose yards with 112.3 yards per game.
On the defensive side, senior Josh Woodburn (Huntingtown, Md.) leads the Liberty League with 1.83 tackles for loss per game, while his 7.3 tackles per game ranks 15th.
As a team, Merchant Marine ranks third in the conference in scoring offense (34.0 points per game) and second in scoring defense (allowing just 18.0 points per game). The Mariners are the league leaders in total offense with 456.3 yards per game and the defense ranks second in allowing just 263.7 yards per game.
