KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Sept. 20, 2016) – For the second straight week, a USMMA football player has landed on the Liberty League Weekly Honor Roll, as this time it's senior linebacker Josh Woodburn (Huntingtown, Md.) that gets the nod. The honor comes after Woodburn's performance in the Mariners' tough 20-16 road loss at SUNY Maritime this past Friday night.
The senior captain led Merchant Marine with 14 total tackles (12 solo and two assisted) on the night. He recorded four tackles for losses of a combined six yards, including one sack for a loss of one yard. Woodburn currently leads the Mariners and ranks eighth in the Liberty League with 8.5 tackles per game, while his five tackles for losses are good for fourth in the league.
Among other Liberty League leaders, junior quarterback Robert Moore (Pace, Fla.) is the rushing leader with 171.5 yards per game, an average of over 50 yards per game more than second place Sean McAllen from WPI. Sophomore Wiley Martin (Polo, Mo.) ranks sixth in the league in scoring (9.0 points per game) and his 80.5 rushing yards per game is good for seventh.
Classmate Joe Bellomo (Holliston, Mass.) is also in the top 10 in the league in rushing, as his 70.0 yards per game ranks him 10th. Freshman Joseph Vitelli (Warrington, Pa.) is the Liberty's top kick returner with an average return of 25.6 yards per kick, while he also ranks fourth in punt returns with 22.9 yards per return.
As a team, USMMA ranks second in the Liberty League in total defense, allowing just 266 yards per game. The squad is first in the league in rushing (362.0 yards per game) and their rushing defense ranks second (65 yards per game).
