BRONX, N.Y. (Sept. 16, 2016) – The USMMA football team lost its second game of the season, and final non-conference game, on Friday night to local rival SUNY Maritime, 20-16, at the Privateers' Reinhart Field. The loss drops the Mariners' record to an even 1-1 on the season, while Maritime improves to 2-1.
Junior quarterback Robert Moore (Pace, Fla.) led the Mariners with 142 yards on the ground with one touchdown run. Sophomore Wiley Martin (Polo, Mo.) gained 60 yards and also had a rushing score for Merchant Marine. Junior Erik Swayne (Great Falls, Va.) produced the Mariners' final points of the game with an 18-yard fourth quarter field goal.
The Mariners got on the scoreboard first after their first possession of the game when Moore capped off an 18-play, 67-yard drive with a three-yard TD run. Maritime responded with two field goals in the second quarter and Merchant Marine took a 7-6 lead into the halftime break.
Martin extended the Mariner lead to 13-6 early in the third quarter, but the Privateers scored two touchdowns in a row to take their first lead of the night – the first coming late in the third, followed by the eventual game-winner on the first play of the fourth quarter.
USMMA had two possessions late in the fourth quarter to try and take the lead back, but were stopped on a 4th-and-4 play to end the first and the second possession resulted a game-clinching interception for Maritime.
The Mariner defense was led by senior Josh Woodburn (Huntingtown, Md.), who totaled 14 tackles, including a sack for a loss of four yards. Classmate Patrick Keyes (Parsippany, Md.) also recorded double-digit tackles with 10.
The Mariners are back at it next Saturday, Sept. 24, when they host Rochester in their Liberty League opener. The game will be part of Homecoming Weekend at Kings Point. Kickoff is slated for 2 p.m. at Brooks Stadium. Live stats and a live video feed of the game will be available with links on the USMMA Football Schedule Page.
