KINGS POINT, N.Y. (July 8, 2016) – On Friday, U.S. Merchant Marine Academy head football coach Mike Toop announced the schedule for the upcoming 2016 season, his 12th year at the helm of the program. The nine-game slate begins on Saturday, Sept. 10 and the regular season last through the second weekend in November.
The 2016 campaign marks the final season that the Mariners will compete in the Liberty League before moving to the NEWMAC beginning in the 2017 season. USMMA will play four home games this year on Captain Tomb Field at Brooks Stadium, and travel on the road for five games, including both non-conference games.
The Mariners kick off the new campaign with a trip up to New London, Conn. to square off against arch-rival Coast Guard in the Secretaries' Cup game on Saturday, Sept. 10. The two teams will be meeting for the final time as non-conference opponents, as they will both be in the NEWMAC together in 2017. The Mariners have won four of the last five meetings over the Bears, including last year's, and are 14-4 against USCGA dating back to 1998.
Less than a week later on Friday, Sept. 16, Merchant Marine will travel across the Long Island Sound to visit nearby rival SUNY Maritime College in the annual "Seafaring Scuffle" for the squad's final tune-up before Liberty League action begins.
Rochester will visit Kings Point to kick off conference play on Saturday, Sept. 24, as part of the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy Homecoming Weekend. More information on all Homecoming festivities will be available in the beginning of the fall.
USMMA will then hit the road for two straight Liberty League games. The road swing begins up at Hobart in Geneva, N.Y., on Saturday, Oct. 1, before the Mariners travel to Worcester, Mass. the following week on Saturday, Oct. 8, for a showdown with WPI.

After a bye week the final week of October, the last road trip of the season comes on Saturday, Nov. 5, when Merchant Marine takes on Union College up in Schenectady, N.Y. The Mariners will close out the regular season on Saturday, Nov. 12, at home against Springfield College on Senior Day at Brooks Stadium.
