Compelete Game Notes (PDF)

Setting the Scene...  Merchant Marine takes on Coast Guard Saturday afternoon at Brooks Stadium in the most anticipated game of the season as the two sides compete for the Secretaries' Cup.  USMMA will be looking to keep the cup in Kings Point as well as win a second straight game to open the 2013 season.  The Mariners are coming off of a 35-28 victory over Susquehanna in which they erased a 21-point deficit.  On the other hand, Coast Guard is still in search of its first win of the year after falling to St. Lawrence, 21-17, on the road last weekend.  The atmosphere at Brooks promises to be electric as all available USMMA Midshipmen and USCGA Cadets will be on hand.

Series History...   USMMA leads the all-time series against Coast Guard, 28-13, and also controls the record with the Secretaries' Cup on the line, 21-11.  The Mariners have defeated the Bears in 12 of the last 15 match-ups, including last year's wild 43-37 shootout victory in New London, CT.  In that game, USMMA dominated the time of possession by holding the ball for 38:24 and chewing up over 500 yards of total offense.  John-Leon Gosselin, who graduated in the spring of 2013, racked up 146 yards and three touchdowns in the 2012 clash for the cup.

Down, But Not Out...  Merchant Marine surrendered the first three touchdowns of the game last week against Susquehanna, setting the stage for the Mariners to rally back from a 21-point first quarter deficit.  The USMMA defense regrouped at halftime and shutout the Crusaders in the final 30 minutes of action, including a goal-line stand in the final minute that sealed the victory.

A Debut To Remember...  Matthew McDaniels (Malverne, NY) made his first collegiate start at quarterback a memorable one, accounting for four touchdowns and over 300 yards of offense en route to being named the Liberty League Co-Offensive Player of the Week.  McDaniels also set a new Academy record by rushing for 199 yards in the second half.  He finished the game with 196 yards and three touchdowns on the ground to go along with 113 passing yards and one touchdown.

Highlight Reel Plays...  The Mariners wasted no time filling up the 2013 highlight reel with three scoring plays that went for over 65 yards against Susquehanna.  USMMA's first touchdown of the season came on a 71-yard passing play up the seam to Connor Kennedy (Bellerose, NY).  McDaniels' game-tying and go-ahead trips to the end zone were the result of 88-yard and 66-yard scrambles, respectively.

Home Field Advantage...  USMMA claimed its first victory of the season at home, continuing its recent success at Tomb Field.  The Mariners posted a 4-1 record last season inside the friendly confines of Brooks Stadium.  The offense averaged an extra touchdown per game at home while the defense surrendered over 20 points less when playing on its home field.

Around The Liberty League... The Liberty League went a perfect 6-0 last weekend as Hobart, Merchant Marine, St. Lawrence, Springfield, WPI, and RPI all picked up a victory in their first game of 2013.  Union and Rochester will take to the field for the first time this weekend while USMMA and Springfield will be the only teams playing at home in week two. Defending league champion and preseason favorite Hobart is ranked #7 in the nation and will enjoy its bye week at 1-0.

Up Next...  Next up, the Mariners will take-on another rival as they travel across the Throggs Neck Bridge to square-off with Maritime (NY).  Merchant Marine will look to win its second straight game against the Privateers after defeating Maritime (NY) for the first time in program history last year, 19-14.
