KINGS POINT, N.Y. (March 19, 2019) – The USMMA baseball team defeated visiting non-conference opponent Baruch College, 10-2, on Tuesday in the Mariners' home-opener at Lower Roosevelt Field. With the win, Merchant Marine improves to 7-5, while the Bearcats fall to 3-7 in defeat.
The Mariners broke through with four runs in the bottom of the first inning on a pair of two-out, two-run singles by sophomore Alex Mesaros (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and senior Reilly Cherry (Coeur d'Alene, Idaho) and they never looked back. Both teams scored a run in the third, USMMA's coming on a failed pickoff at second base and a pair of errors on the same play that allowed junior Matt Mundorf (San Luis Obispo, Calif.) to come across to make it 5-1.
Merchant Marine took advantage of another Baruch blunder to score a run in the fifth, when junior Matthew Austin (Rockledge, Fla.) and Cherry both stole third and second, respectively, and Austin came in after the Bearcats' catcher's throw wound up in centerfield. They added another run on an RBI-double by freshman Griffin Reddeck (Fort Mill, S.C.) in the seventh inning.
The Mariners closed out the scoring in the bottom of the eighth with a pair of extra-base hits to right field – an RBI-double by sophomore Vincenzo Alteri (Watertown, N.Y.) and a two-run triple by Mundorf.
On the mound, the Mariners used a total of eight pitchers in the game, with freshman Garrett Aichele (Bainbridge Island, Wash.) getting the start and lasting two innings, giving up a hit and striking out five. The win went to senior Andrew Spinnenweber (Pasadena, Md.), after his 1-2-3 inning with two strikeouts in the fifth.
Four other pitchers tossed a scoreless inning of relief each – freshman Colton McDaniel (Buford, Ga.) in the third, sophomore Andrew Hunt (Severna Park, Md.) in the sixth, freshman Billy Todd (Gastonia, N.C.) in the eighth and senior Kyle Cunningham (Panama City Beach, Fla.) to close it out in the ninth.
Mesaros (2-for-3), Alteri (2-for-4) and senior Jesse Reinebold (Sagamihara, Japan) (2-for-5) all had multi-hit games for the Mariners, as Mesaros knocked in two and scored twice, Alteri had an RBI and a run and Reinebold came across to score two times. Also scoring a run for Merchant Marine was senior Zack Winzer (Muskegon, Mich.) in the seventh inning.
USMMA stole a total of 10 bases on the day, with sophomore Jacob Kelly (Norfolk, Va.) leading the way with two.
Up next, the Mariners will open Skyline Conference action this Saturday, March 23, at Farmingdale State College. First pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 12 p.m. Live links for both of the games will be available on the USMMA Baseball Schedule Page.
