OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. (April 24, 2018) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy baseball team lost its road game at Division II opponent NYIT on Tuesday afternoon by the final score of 9-4. The defeat drops the Mariners' record to 23-11, while the Bears improve to 9-22-1.
USMMA got on the board first by scoring all four of their runs in the top of the third inning. Freshman Vincenzo Alteri (Watertown, N.Y.) reached on a leadoff single and then swiped second base before senior Michael Barnes (Alexandria, Va.) drove him in with a triple.
Junior Kyle Cunningham (Panama City Beach, Fla.) followed with an RBI groundout that scored Barnes to make it 2-0 before back-to-back-back singles by senior Bryson Campbell (Cool, Calif.), freshman Alex Mesaros (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and junior Zack Winzer (Muskegon, Mich.) loaded the bases.
Freshman Jack McCann (Newark, Del.) brought Campbell in with a sacrifice fly and then senior Steve Lucy (Leawood, Kan.) drove in Mesaros with a single to chase the Bears' starting pitcher, redshirt-freshman Zach White. Junior reliever Matt Bartnik got the final out of the third after the Mariners hung four runs up on the scoreboard.
NYIT responded with three of their own in the very next half-inning, however, and then took their first lead of the game with two more in the bottom of the fourth. They added two more runs in both the fifth and the eighth.
Lucy finished the game 3-for-4 with a triple, while Alteri, Mesaros and Winzer all had two hits each. Alteri finished with a game-high two stolen bases, while junior Jesse Reinebold (Granger, Ind.) swiped one base.
On the mound, freshman Joaquin Munoz (Lubbock, Texas) got the start and pitched the first three innings (into the fourth), giving up three runs on four hits with one strikeout. Senior Justus Martin (Eaton, Colo.) tossed the next 2.0 innings and allowed four runs on six hits with one K, while freshman Quinton Heck (Massillon, Ohio) hurled 2.1 and gave up two runs on four hits. Junior John Kelly Jr. (Apex, N.C.) finished the final 0.2 innings and struck out one.
For the Bears, sophomore Ryan Kuskowski finished 3-for-5 from the dish with a game-high three RBIs. Senior leadoff batter Joey Fusco scored three runs to lead all players on the afternoon. Bartnik earned the win with 5.1 solid shutout innings of relief, allowing just three hits.
