KINGS POINT, N.Y. (April 14, 2018) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy baseball team lost its Skyline Conference home doubleheader to Mount St. Mary College on Saturday at Lower Roosevelt Field, dropping the opener by the score of 7-1 before losing the second game, 4-2. The Mariners' record drops to 21-7 (8-4 Skyline), while the Knights improve to 16-7 (8-2 Skyline).
In game one, the Knights jumped out to 1-0 lead in the top of the first, but the Mariners tied it up with a run of their own in the next half-inning on an RBI-infield single with the bases loaded by senior Bryson Campbell (Cool, Calif.) that scored junior Jesse Reinebold (Granger, Ind.).
Mount St. Mary would score one run in both the second and third innings and then built its lead up to 5-1 with a pair of runs in the fourth. They added two more runs in the seventh and ninth to cruise to the victory.
Reinebold had the Mariners' lone multi-hit game, as he was 2-for-4 with a run, while Campbell was one of four Mariners with one hit. Freshman Joe Raab (Edwardsburg, Mich.) suffered his first career loss, tossing seven innings and allowing six runs (three earned) on eight hits with four strikeouts. Sophomore Keith Heimbrock (Greenwood Village, Colo.) hurled two innings of relief and gave up a run on three hits with two Ks.
Senior Christopher Introcaso was a perfect 4-for-4 with two doubles and four RBIs to lead the Knights, while sophomore Anthony Rizzo went 3-for-5 with two RBIs. Rizzo, sophomore John Santana and senior Kevin Edgar all scored twice in the victory.
Senior Blake Keenan earned the complete-game victory for Mount St. Mary, tossing all nine innings and giving up just one run on six hits with six strikeouts.
In the second game, the Knights got on the board first with two runs in the fifth inning and then doubled their lead with a run in both the sixth and seventh. Trailing 4-0 in the bottom of the seventh, the Mariners mustered two runs, but they were unable to complete the comeback.
Merchant Marine had just five hits in the affair, with senior Kyle Cunningham (Panama City Beach, Fla.) recording the only RBI on his bases loaded single in the seventh that plated senior Jacob Sithong (Orlando, Fla.). Reinebold also scored on a double play later in the seventh.
Junior Andrew Spinnenweber (Pasadena, Md.) was on the long end despite pitching the complete game and allowing only three hits. He gave up four runs – just one was earned – and struck out eight, as he falls to 5-2 on the season.
Sophomore Stephen Bauer and freshman Jack Goodwin both knocked in a run for MSMC and four different Knights scored a run. Senior Ryan Hayes earned the victory, tossing six innings and giving up two runs on four hits with three Ks. Sophomore John Santana was the third pitcher to pitch for the Mount in the seventh inning and he picked up the save getting the final three outs of the game.
The Mariners are right back in action on Sunday, when they travel to Ridgefield Park, N.J., to take on Skyline opponent Yeshiva University in a doubleheader that begins at 12-noon at Overpeck Park. Live stats for both games will be available at this link.
