Raab & Barnes Nab Skyline Weekly Honors; Raab Also Named ECAC DIII Metro Pitcher Of The Week

KINGS POINT, N.Y. (March 20, 2018) – U.S. Merchant Marine Academy senior Michael Barnes (Alexandria, Va.) and freshman Joe Raab (Edwardsburg, Mich.) received Skyline weekly awards for baseball, the league announced late on Monday, as Barnes was named the Player of the Week and Raab earned Pitcher of the Week honors for the second straight week. On Tuesday, Raab was also selected as the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) DIII Metro Pitcher of the Week. The accolades come after the duo helped lead the Mariners to a 4-0 record last week with home doubleheader sweeps over Lasell on Saturday and SUNY Oneonta on Sunday.

Barnes led the Mariners with a .538 batting average, seven hits, two doubles, four RBIs and a .923 slugging percentage and tied for the team-high with three runs over the four games. He extended his current hit-streak to seven games with a knock in every contest. The senior was 2-for-4 with an RBI, a run and two stolen bases in the Mariners' 6-5 extra inning win on Saturday in the opener over Lasell, then added a hit in the second game. On Sunday, he was a perfect 3-for-3 in the shutout win in the opener against Oneonta with two doubles and a run scored and then he smashed a three-run homer to lead the Mariners to a 4-2 win in the second game.

Raab flirted with a no-hitter in his complete-game shutout victory over Oneonta on Sunday afternoon – he was one out away in the top of the seventh before the Red Dragons got their first hit of the contest. The rookie threw 7.0 dominant innings with nine strikeouts and allowed just three base-runners in the game (walk, HBP & single).

Barnes is the conference leader with 14 RBIs, ranks fourth with a .651 slugging percentage and seventh with 10 runs scored. He is also tied for sixth in the Skyline with five stolen bases, tied for eighth with a .419 batting average, tied for sixth with three doubles and tied for second with two triples. Raab is the second-best pitcher in the conference with 29 strikeouts and leads the league with 10 strikeouts looking. Both Raab and junior Andrew Spinnenweber (Pasadena, Md.) have a league-leading three wins on the season.

Spinnenweber is the Skyline leader with 30 strikeouts and is second with nine Ks looking. Also among Skyline leaders are freshman Alex Mesaros (Pittsburgh, Pa.) tying for the conference-high of 14 runs scored, junior Tyler Mowry (Peachtree City, Ga.) ranking tied for fifth with a .429 batting average and juniors Kyle Cunningham (Panama City Beach, Fla.) and Jesse Reinebold (Granger, Ind.) ranking tied for third and fifth with 11 and 10 RBIs, respectively.

Nationally, Spinnenweber's two complete games are fourth among all NCAA Division III pitchers, while his 15.00 strikeout-to-walk ratio is ninth and his 0.68 WHIP (walks and hits per innings pitched) rank 17th. Raab ranks 11th in the nation with a 14.50 strikeout-to-walk ratio and 12th with a 0.63 WHIP.

As a team, the Mariners rank in the top-20 in the nation in five categories.

  • First with a 4.70 strikeout-to-walk ratio
  • Third with 2.05 walks allowed per nine innings
  • Sixth with a 1.11 WHIP
  • 17th with 3.08 stolen bases per game
  • 19th with a .833 winning percentage
