Slusarczyk, Barnes And Cunningham Receive Second Team All-Skyline Honors

KINGS POINT, N.Y. (May 9, 2017) – On Tuesday, the Skyline Conference announced the postseason award winners and the All-Conference teams for baseball and USMMA had three student-athletes represent the Academy on the All-Skyline Second Team – senior pitcher Nathan Slusarczyk (Woodbury, N.J.), junior utility player Michael Barnes (Alexandria, Va.) and sophomore third baseman Kyle Cunningham (Panama City Beach, Fla.).
 
Slusarczyk led the Mariners with four wins throughout the season, posting a 4-4 record and a team-high 56.2 innings pitched with an ERA of 3.97. He was tied for ninth in the Skyline in wins, while his 47 strikeouts were second on the squad and sixth in the conference. He was named the Skyline Pitcher of the Week on two occasions this season (March 13 and April 17), while also landing on the weekly honor roll on April 24.
 
Barnes ranked first on the team and 11th in the Skyline with 31 runs scored and he was the Mariners' leader with four triples, which tied for second in the conference. His .333 batting average was second on the team and 25th in the conference and he led Merchant Marine with a .487 slugging percentage, which was 16th best in the Skyline. He was also second on the squad and tied for 25th in the league with 20 runs scored.
 
Cunningham finished the year with a .290 batting average (20-for-69) with 13 RBIs and 11 runs scored. He belted two doubles and one triple to finish the year with a .362 slugging percentage. The sophomore was tied for fifth on the team with eight stolen bases and he was tied for first by getting hit by a pitch eight times. He also laid down a team-best five sacrifice bunts throughout the year. Cunningham was efficient on the mound as well for the Mariners, posting a 1-0 record in six appearances with one save and a 1.29 ERA over seven innings pitched. He struck out six batters and allowed just two hits as opponents batted .091 against him.

Slusarczyk, Barnes and Cunningham were part of the Mariner team that ended the year strong and finished with a 15-19 record, including a 9-9 mark in Skyline Conference action to earn the #6 seed in the conference tournament. They won their first round playoff game over #3 seed Farmingdale State, but ended the year with a pair of losses on the first day of the double-elimination portion of the tournament.
