Spinnenweber’s Two-Hit Shutout Powers Mariners Past Farmingdale, 2-0, In Skyline First Round

Box Score

FARMINGDALE, N.Y. (May 3, 2017) – Sophomore Andrew Spinnenweber (Pasadena, Md.) tossed a complete-game two-hit shutout to lift the sixth-seeded USMMA baseball team to a 2-0 road victory over #3 Farmingdale State on Wednesday afternoon in opening round action of the Skyline Tournament.

With the win, the Mariners improve to 15-17 on the season and advance to this weekend's double-elimination tournament for the Skyline Championship. The Rams end the season with a 21-15 record.

Spinnenweber struck out five batters and walked just two en route to his third win of the season.

The Mariners were held without a hit or baserunner through the first four innings as Farmingdale's freshman starter Joe Marino was cruising, but junior Michael Barnes (Alexandria, Va.) led off the fifth with a triple to right and was brought home on a sacrifice fly by senior Francis Grzymkowski (Stafford, Va.).

Junior Bryson Campbell (Cool, Calif.) doubled the Merchant Marine lead in the sixth when he plated classmate Steve Lucy (Leawood, Kan.) on a bunt-single on a suicide squeeze play. Lucy had led off the inning with a double to left and advanced to third on a wild pitch.

Farmingdale got its first hit in the second inning, an infield single by freshman Vincent Rice, and its second knock came in the sixth on a single by rookie Cam Alfano. Spinnenweber walked two batters in the ninth, but the Mariners were able to escape any damage when the final out landed in the glove of freshman Wyatt Wilson (Chandler, Ariz.).

Marino suffered the loss for FSC after lasting 5.1 innings and giving up two runs on three hits.

The Mariners will now move on to face the second-seeded SUNY Maritime Privateers on Friday, May 5, in the second game of the double-elimination championship tourney hosted by St. Joseph's-L.I. out in Patchogue. The host Golden Eagles will take on #5 Mount St. Mary first beginning at 11 a.m., before USMMA against Maritime at 2:30 p.m. Live stats and a live video feed of the game will be available with links on the USMMA Baseball Schedule Page.
