KINGS POINT, N.Y. (April 13, 2017) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy baseball team won a non-conference contest over visiting Lehman College, 13-2, on Thursday at Lower Roosevelt Field. With the victory, the Mariners improve to 8-14, while the Lightning falls to 6-16.
Junior Bryson Campbell (Cool, Calif.) led the way offensively, going 3-for-4 from the plate with a game-high three RBIs, while also scoring once. Sophomore Jesse Reinebold (Granger, Ind.) went 4-for-6 with two doubles, as he had one RBI and three runs on the day.
Senior Francis Grzymkowski (Stafford, Va.), who got the starting nod on the mound and earned the victory, also helped his own cause with a two-run inside-the-park home run to left in the bottom of the first inning. He finished 2-for-2 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Junior Michael Barnes (Alexandria, Va.) also knocked in two and scored twice as well, and four other Mariners contributed to the offense with one RBI – senior Ricardo Gonzales (Camarillo, Calif.), sophomore Kyle Cunningham (Panama City Beach, Fla.), freshman Matt Mundorf (San Luis Obispo, Calif.) and junior Alex Gambino (Haddonfield, N.J.).
Senior Matthew Thomson (Memphis, Tenn.) scored twice, while classmate Spencer Blauw (Strasburg, Colo.), freshman Matthew Austin (Rockledge, Fla.) and junior Steven Lucy (Leawood, Kan.) also came across home plate. Lucy drew four walks on the afternoon.
Gryzmkowski got the win after hurling six innings of one-run ball, giving up just four hits. Junior Justus Martin (Eaton, Colo.), freshman Ben Kane (Fountain Valley, Calif.) and sophomore John Kelly Jr. (Apex, N.C.) finished the game with one-inning pitched each. Martin gave up one run on two hits with one strikeout, Kane struck out the side in the eighth and Kelly had one K in the ninth.
For Lehman, senior Jason Laguna suffered the loss, lasting five innings and allowing eight runs (seven earned) on 11 hits with one strikeout. Sophomore Geraldo Rodriguez pitched three innings of relief and gave up five runs (three earned) on six hits while fanning four batters.
Junior Natanael Toribio and junior Frances Vasquez drove in the Lightning's runs, with senior Jeffrey Ledesma and freshman Brandon Castillo scoring.
The Mariners are back in action this Saturday, April 15, when they host Skyline opponent St. Joseph's of Long Island for a doubleheader. First pitch of the opener is scheduled for 12-noon at Lower Roosevelt Field. Live coverage of the game will not be available.
