Mariners Swept In Skyline-Opening Doubleheader At Farmingdale State

FARMINGDALE, N.Y. (March 24, 2017) – The USMMA baseball team lost its first two Skyline Conference games of the year at Farmingdale State on Friday, losing the first game, 12-4, before dropping the second, 5-0. The two losses drop the Mariners' record to 2-8 (0-2 Skyline) on the season, while the Rams improve to 5-7 (2-0) with the victories.
 
In the opening game, the Mariners took an early lead with three runs in the top of the first inning. Junior Michael Barnes (Alexandria, Va.) knocked in two of those runs with a double down the left field line that plated senior Matthew Thomson (Memphis, Tenn.) and sophomore Jesse Reinebold (Granger, Ind.). Three batters later, Barnes came across on a passed ball before the inning-ending strikeout.
 
The Rams responded with one run in the bottom of the first and then went ahead, 4-3, with three in the bottom of the third. The hosts took a firmer grip on the game with five runs over the seventh and eighth innings before the Mariners tacked on one more on an RBI single by sophomore Kyle Cunningham (Panama City Beach, Fla.) that scored junior Bryson Campbell (Cool, Calif.). Farmingdale tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the eighth to close out the scoring in the game.
 
Senior Nathan Slusarczyk (Woodbury, N.J.) suffered the loss, giving up seven runs (six earned) over six innings pitched on seven hits with two strikeouts. Classmates Francis Grzymkowski (Stafford, Va.) and Spencer Blauw (Strasburg, Colo.) both hurled one inning of relief.
 
For Farmingdale, sophomore Matthew Constantine earned the victory after throwing six innings of relief and giving up just one run on two hits with seven K's. Senior starter Matt Seelinger was tacked for three runs (two earned) on four hits with two strikeouts over the first two innings of action. Senior Dalton McCarthy led FSC with two runs batted in and three players scored a team-best two runs apiece.
 
In game two, the Mariners were held to just four hits in the shutout loss. Rams junior David Otero Jr. got the win, tossing five shutout innings in the seven-inning contest, as he allowed the four hits and struck out eight batters. Sophomore Ryan Mallon picked up a save after entering a 1-0 game in the sixth and throwing two shutout and hitless innings with one K.
 
Sophomore starter Andrew Spinnenweber (Pasadena, Md.) was on the losing end, giving up five runs, four in the sixth, on nine hits. Classmate John Kelly Jr. (Apex, N.C.) got the final defensive out for the Mariners.
 
For Farmingdale, junior Nicholas Soriano plated a team-high two runs, while sophomore Joseph Roche scored twice to lead the Rams.
 
Up next, the Mariners will travel up to Purchase College on Sunday, March 26, for another Skyline Conference doubleheader. Action is scheduled to get underway at 11 a.m. Live stats for both games will be available at this link.
