FORT MYERS, Fla. (March 10, 2017) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy baseball team picked up its first victory of the 2017 season on Friday, beating Anna Maria College, 14-2, on the second-to-last day of the Gene Cusic Classic. The Mariners improve to 1-4 on the year, while the AMCATs fall to 2-8.
Freshman Matt Mundorf (San Luis Obispo, Calif.) led the Mariner offense, going 3-for-4 at the plate with four RBIs and a run scored. Sophomore Michael Barnes (Alexandria, Va.) also went 3-for-4, as he knocked in one run and scored three times. Freshman Wyatt Wilson (Chandler, Ariz.) matched Barnes' team-high of three runs scored, while also going 1-for-4 with an RBI.
On the mound, senior Nathan Slusarczyk (Woodbury, N.J.) was sharp in seven innings of work to earn his first victory of the year, as he moves to 1-1. He allowed just one hit and fanned nine Anna Maria batters. Classmate Timothy Pamlayne (Ronkonkoma, N.Y.) allowed two unearned runs in two innings of release on two hits, while striking out one.
The Mariners got on the board with three runs in the bottom of the second and quickly moved their advantage to 7-0 with four unearned runs in the third. USMMA took advantage of six AMCAT errors to score a total of six unearned runs in the game.
Anna Maria only mustered three hits in the game, with junior Tanner Jakola, freshman Jacob Nichols and sophomore Matt Elliot getting the knocks. Elliot and freshman Anthony Oliva scored the only two runs on the day for the AMCATs on the very last play of the game in the top of the ninth.
