FORT MYERS, Fla. (March 8, 2017) – The USMMA baseball team lost its matchup against Thiel College at the Gene Cusic Classic down in Florida on Wednesday by the final score of 9-2. The Mariners fall to 0-4 on the season, while the Tomcats improve to 3-2.
Thiel broke through first with four runs in the bottom of the opening inning. The Mariners got one run back in the third on a home run by senior Matthew Thomson (Memphis, Tenn.), however, the Tomcats added another run in the fourth and then broke the game open with three in the sixth that made the score 8-1.
One more run came across for Merchant Marine in the top of the eight when senior Spencer Blauw (Strasburg, Colo.) brought home freshman Matt Mundorf (San Luis Obispo, Calif.) with an RBI single to right field. Thiel closed out the scoring with one more run in the bottom of the eighth.
Senior Francis Grzymkowski (Stafford, Va.) suffered the loss for the Mariners after hurling four innings, giving up five runs on six hits with five strikeouts.
Thiel senior Patrick Fitzpatrick earned the victory, tossing five innings and allowing one run on five hits with six K's. Sophomores Daniel Patrice and Nick Fowkes both knocked in two runs apiece for the Tomcats.
The Mariners are back in action this Friday, March 10, when they take on Anna Maria College. Opening pitch is slated for 9 a.m. No live coverage will be available for the contest against the AMCATs.
