Mariners Fall In Rubber Game At Elizabethtown On Sunday

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. (April 17, 2016) – On Sunday, the USMMA baseball team wrapped up its three-game Landmark Conference series at Elizabethtown by suffering a 17-1 loss to the Blue Jays. In defeat, the Mariners fall to 9-19 (5-10 Landmark), while ETown improves to 18-13 (9-6 Landmark).

Merchant Marine's lone run of the game came in the top of the ninth inning, when junior Rick Kernan (Blythewood, S.C.) brought freshman Zack Winzer (Muskegon, Mich.) home with an RBI groundout.

On the mound, junior starter Nathan Slusarczyk (Woodbury, N.J.) suffered the loss. Three other Mariners came in in relief, including freshman John Kelly Jr. (Apex, N.C.), who hurled one scoreless and hitless inning, striking out one Elizabethtown batter and walking another.

The Blue Jays were led by their number five and six hitters, senior Aaron Rahn and sophomore Brennan Snyder, who both knocked in three runs apiece. Senior starter Nick Gulla earned the victory after tossing six shutout innings, allowing five hits and four walks with six strikeouts.

The Mariners are back at it this Wednesday night, April 20, when they travel across the Throgs Neck Bridge to The Bronx to face local and future Skyline Conference rival SUNY Maritime College.
