FARMINGDALE, N.Y. (March 29, 2016) – The USMMA baseball team fell to non-conference opponent Farmingdale State, 9-3, on the road Tuesday night. The Mariners' record falls to 4-13 on the season in defeat, while the Rams improve to 4-9.
Freshman Tyler Mowry (Peachtree City, Ga.) led Merchant Marine by going 1-for-4 on the night with an RBI single in the third and an RBI groundout in the fifth. Classmate Reilly Cherry (Coeur d'Alene, Idaho) knocked in the Mariners' other run with a sacrifice fly in the sixth.
Farmingdale got on the board first when the Rams brought four runs across in the bottom of the second inning. After Mowry's RBI single scored sophomore Steve Lucy (Leadwood, Kan.) from second base in the third, Farmingdale doubled its score with four more runs in the bottom of the fourth.
The Mariners scored a run each in the fifth and sixth, but the Rams added another in the sixth which closed out the scoring on the night.
Senior starter Kyle Clausen (Southold, N.Y.) suffered the loss on the mound for the Mariners, as he tossed 3.1 innings and allowed eight runs (seven earned) on just six hits with three strikeouts. Freshman John Kelly Jr. (Apex, N.C.) hurled 2.2 innings in relief and allowed just one run on three hits, while classmate Kyle Cunningham (Panama City Beach, Fla.) threw a scoreless seventh inning with a strikeout and senior Jeff Suciu (Zanesville, Ohio) tossed a scoreless eighth with one K.
Freshman Joseph Roche registered three RBIs to lead the Rams, while three others knocked in two apiece – freshmen Nick Attardi, Michael Ciullo and Joshua Shapiro. On the mound, junior Matt Seelinger earned the win after going six innings and allowing three runs on six hits with six strikeouts. Sophomore Ryan O'Connor earned the save after closing out the final three innings and allowing no runs on three hits with six Ks.
The Mariners return home this Thursday, March 31, when they host St. Joseph's of Long Island at 4:15 p.m. at Lower Roosevelt Field.
