Notebaert Releases 2016 Baseball Schedule

KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Feb. 24, 2016) – On Wednesday, USMMA baseball eighth-year head coach Michael Notebaert announced the scheduled for the Mariners' upcoming 2016 season. The slate features 38 regular season games, including 15 at home at Lower Roosevelt Field, 15 road games and eight neutral site games down in Fort Myers, Fla., as part of the 2016 Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic.

The Mariners will play 21 games against Landmark Conference opponents (three against the other seven teams) in their last season as part of the league before moving back to the Skyline Conference next year. The other 17 games will be against non-conference opponents.

First pitch of the 2016 season is scheduled for Sunday, March 6, down in Florida, as part of the eight-game Spring Break trip. The Mariners will play a neutral-site doubleheader against arch-rival Coast Guard on Sunday and will close out the three-game series on Monday with a single game. The winner of the series against the Bears will earn a point towards the chase for the 2015-16 Superintendents' Trophy.

Merchant Marine will then take on Elms College in a doubleheader on Wednesday, March 9, before facing Wabash in a single game on the morning of Friday, March 11. Action concludes at the Cusic Classic on Saturday, March 12, with a doubleheader against Gettysburg.

The Mariners' first game in New York will be a road contest at Baruch College in Brooklyn on Tuesday, March 15. From there, the squad will travel to Huntingdon, Pa. that weekend to open Landmark action at Juniata March 19-20.

The 2016 home opener is slated for Tuesday, March 22, against non-conference opponent John Jay. USMMA then hosts Drew on Friday-Saturday, March 25-26, in its first home Landmark series of the year.

Two non-conference games against future Skyline opponents will be played during the next week, as Merchant Marine travels to nearby Farmingdale State on Tuesday, March 29, before hosting St. Joseph's (L.I.) on Thursday, March 31.

April opens with a three-game home series against Landmark opponent Susquehanna the weekend of April 2-3.

The Mariners will then play nine games away from home, beginning with a road game at the College of Staten Island on Wed., April 6, followed by a conference series at Scranton April 9-10. The squad returns to New York, but travels to face St. Joseph's (Brooklyn) on Wednesday, April 13, before hitting the road for Pennsylvania for the second-straight weekend with a Landmark series at Elizabethtown April 16-17.

After a non-conference road game at rival SUNY Maritime on Wednesday, April 20, the Mariners will host 2015 Landmark Champions Catholic on Saturday-Sunday, April 23-24. The late-season seven-game homestand continues with a mid-week matchup against Lehman on April 26 before the final conference series of the season April 30-May 1 against Moravian.

Sunday, May 1 will serve as Senior Day, as the Mariners' five seniors will be honored before the contest against the Greyhounds. The regular season concludes on Tuesday, April 3, with a non-conference road contest at Old Westbury.

The top four teams in the Landmark standings at the end of the regular season qualify for the Landmark Tournament. The two best-of-three semifinal series are scheduled for Saturday-Sunday, May 7-8, while the championship series will be held on Friday-Saturday, May 13-14. All Landmark Tournament series will be hosted by the higher seeds.

Last week, the Landmark Conference announced that Merchant Marine was picked to finish seventh in the Preseason Coaches' Poll.
