Old Westbury, NY - The USMMA baseball team picked up its 20th win of the 2014 season Tuesday night with a 6-4 triumph over Old Westbury. Five different pitchers combined to limit the Panthers offense while Jeff Wright (Las Vegas, NV) earned the victory to move to 2-0 on the year. Freshman Richard Kernan (Blythewood, SC) went 2-for-4 at the plate and provided the go-ahead RBI in the fourth inning.
Old Westbury (18-20) notched two runs in the top of the first inning, in large part, thanks to the efforts of Jonathan Pagan. Pagan roped a RBI double down the left field line and later scored to make it 2-0 as he stole second base an errant throw allowed him to cross the plate. The Mariners got one run back in the top of the third as Jacob Wood (Richmond, VA) scored on a wild pitch.
U.S. Merchant Marine Academy (20-11-1) knotted it at 2-2 in the fourth as Jake Martin (San Diego, CA) pounded a single through the middle of the diamond to chase home Cameron Stadele (Alpharetta, GA). Kernan followed with a RBI single to left that pushed the advantage to 3-2. The Mariners benefited from a Panthers error in the top of the seventh that allowed three unearned runs to come home. Joseph Policastro (Hauppauge, NY), Warren Hartmann (Wyckoff, NJ), and Danny Collins (Sleepy Hollow, NY) all registered a RBI as the USMMA cushion grew to 6-2.
The home side struck for two runs in the eighth but Stadele slammed the door in the ninth to secure the save. Jeff Suicu (Zanesville, OH) and Brad Suciu (Zanesville, OH) combined for three shutout innings following Wright's three-inning start. Martin tossed the seventh and eighth before handing the ball to Stadele for the final three outs.
The USMMA baseball team will now turn its attention to the postseason as they take on top-seeded Moravian in the first round of the Landmark Conference Tournament on Saturday.
