Selinsgrove, PA - Danny Collins (Sleepy Hollow, NY) went 6-of-13 with three RBI at the plate but the USMMA baseball team dropped three games over the weekend to Landmark Conference rival Susquehanna. The Mariners dropped two one-run games, including an 11-10 15 inning affair in the series finale. USMMA was upended in both games of a Saturday double header by scores of 7-3 and 2-1.
Susquehanna (13-3, 6-0 Landmark) put up five runs in the second inning of the opening game of the series. USMMA answered with three runs in the top of the third as Andrew MacKinnon (Buffalo, NY), Warren Hartmann (Wyckoff, NJ), and Collins all had RBI hits. However, the Crusaders would add two insurance runs down the stretch to seal the 7-3 decision. The Mariners committed four errors in the first game of the set, which resulted in three unearned runs.
Merchant Marine (8-5, 0-3 Landmark) scratched out one run in game two of the double header with a Hartmann RBI single to bring home MacKinnon. Freshman Patrick Morgan (Roxboro, NC) pitched six innings and allowed two runs while allowing six base runners and striking out three batters. However, USMMA was unable to score again as the Crusaders came out with a narrow 2-1 victory.
The final game of the series was a slugfest as the two sides traded the lead with big innings. USMMA trailed 10-9 heading into the top of the ninth and got a leadoff walk from Jake Martin (San Digeo, CA). MacKinnon tied the game with a two-out double down the left field line, sending the Mariners to their first extra inning game of the season. In the bottom of the 15th inning it was a throwing error that led to the game winning run as Susquehanna completed the three-game sweep with an 11-10 triumph.
The USMMA baseball team is scheduled to return to the field Tuesday for a non-conference game against CCNY.
