The second-seeded USMMA baseball team opens play at the 2013 Landmark Conference Tournament tomorrow against #3 Moravian in Washington, DC at Catholic University. The Mariners finished the regular season 11-7 in league play, earning a share of the Landmark Conference regular season title for the first time in program history. USMMA enters the postseason having won six of its last eight games.
Merchant Marine vs. The Field… The Mariners hold a 5-4 record against the rest of the field in the 2013 Landmark Conference Tournament. USMMA took two-of-three games against both Moravian and Scranton in the regular season while only winning one game from top-seeded Catholic. In all three of those series, Merchant Marine won the opening game of the set.
USMMA's Landmark Conference Tournament History… This will be the second straight season that the Mariners will enter the Landmark Conference Tournament as the second-seed. Last year, the Mariners won their tournament opener before dropping two games on Sunday, ultimately being eliminated by Moravian. Merchant Marine is making its third appearance in the Landmark Conference Tournament and currently holds a 4-4 record in the event with one trip to the championship round.
Hartmann Etches Names in Record Books… Junior Warren Hartmann (Wyckoff, NJ) has already put his name in the Academy record book with an outstanding 2013 campaign. The second baseman has established new USMMA single-season records with a league leading .460 batting average as well as 24 stolen bases. Hartmann ended the year red-hot with four straight multi-hit games and eight RBI over that span.
Built For Offense… USMMA is far and away the best hitting team in the Landmark Conference, posting a team batting average of .334 this season. The Mariners will have seven starters in their lineup who are hitting at least .325 on the year. USMMA also boasts an on-base percentage of .405 along with a .427 slugging percentage. In addition to Hartmann's league-leading average, Danny Collins (Sleepy Hollow, NY) ranks second in the circuit with a .403 average and Nicholas Kopacka (Saugus, CA) is fourth swinging at a .371 clip. Collins, a Capital One Academic All-District First-Team selection, also leads the Landmark Conference with 38 RBI on the year.
Thieves on the Bases… Merchant Marine is the top base stealing team in the league, swiping 92 bags on the year. USMMA's 3-4-5 hitters have all recorded double-digits in steals while 15 different Mariners have recorded at least one stolen base. As a team, the Mariners posted at least one steal in nine straight games to end the season and notched five games with at least five stolen bases.
History on the Line… USMMA sits at 19 wins on the season with the program single-season record currently standing at 22 victories. The Mariners can win their first-ever Landmark Conference Championship this weekend and would at least tie the Academy record for wins.
