Kings Point, NY – The USMMA baseball team suffered an 11-0 setback in the rubber game of a three-game set Sunday versus Catholic. The Cardinals hit three homeruns in the victory while being the first team this season to shutout the Mariners in 2013. USMMA now sits in fourth place in the Landmark Conference standings.
Catholic (21-11, 8-4 Landmark) pushed ahead in the top of the first as Nick Clary cracked a two-out RBI single to make it 1-0. The Cardinals then put on a delayed steal with runners at the corners, allowing the second marker of the day to cross the plate before the Mariners could throw out Clary heading to second base.
CUA added a pair of runs in the second frame with a Charlie Dillon single as well as two-out USMMA error. The Cardinals again ran a delayed steal with runners at the corners but this time the play ended with a collision at home.
Merchant Marine (13-11, 8-7 Landmark) found itself in a 7-0 hole after a RBI single from Mark Kalokitis in the fifth inning immediately followed by a Chris McCloud two-run homer down the left field line. Catholic pushed its cushion to 9-0 in the eighth with back-to-back solo homers from Clara and Marc Hanna. The Cardinals also posted two runs in the ninth to round out the final score to 11-0.
The USMMA baseball team returns to action Wednesday as they travel across the Throggs Neck Bridge for a non-conference clash against Maritime (NY).
